America: A Bible Nation at Charis

The accomplishments of both America and the Bible are unmatched but not unrelated.

David BartonA fact largely unknown today but widely acknowledged by national leaders throughout American history is that the Bible was the key factor in America’s success. For example:

[T]he teachings of the Bible are so interwoven and entwined with our whole civic and social life that it would be literally—I do not mean figuratively, I mean literally—impossible for us to figure to ourselves what that life would be if these teachings were removed. We would lose almost all the standards by which we now judge both public and private morals—all the standards toward which we, with more or less resolution, strive to raise ourselves. Almost every man who has by his life-work added to the sum of human achievement of which the race is proud—of which our people are proud—almost every such man has based his life-work largely upon the teachings of the Bible.”

President Teddy Roosevelt

The Bible’s numerous benefits were so universally recognized that organizations were formed specifically to promote the distribution of Bibles and Bible reading. This was done by presidents, military generals, attorney generals, and Supreme Court justices!

In previous generations, these men led the way because they especially understood the practical relevance of the Bible—not only to everyday life but also its indispensable importance to the maintenance of national life.

Consequently, in 1781, a plan was advanced in Congress to print America’s first English language Bible. Of the events surrounding the printing of this Bible, one early historian observed:

“Who [. . .] will call in question the assertion that this is a Bible nation? Who will charge the government with indifference to religion when the first Congress of the States assumed all the rights and performed all the duties of a Bible Society long before such an institution had an existence in the world!”

W.P. Strickland

The Bible was key in causing America to be the most successful nation in the world. Its timeless principles still apply to every area of life today, from the pocketbook to the judiciary, from the pulpit to the state house, and from the school to your house.
