A Sure-Fire Way to Get Promoted
Do you feel you should be promoted, but you feel like you’re being overlooked?
God created you for greatness. But some people think only the educated and charismatic get promoted. Others feel that employers promote people based on friendships or special connections.
But the Bible says something completely different:
“For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.” —Psalm 75:6-7
Promotion comes from God! He doesn’t “sovereignly” make some people leaders and others followers. He’s the One who exalts, but there’s more to it.
The key to promotion lies within you. It’s called an excellent spirit.
Daniel, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were promoted, even in an evil, ungodly society. They arrived in Babylon as slaves, but they grew in favor and influence with four different kings and became trusted advisors and rulers under each.
How was this possible?
“Then this Daniel was preferred above the presidents and princes, because an excellent spirit was in him.” —Daniel 6:3
This supernatural promotion only comes from God. The supernatural favor they had didn’t come from their external circumstances; it came from the inside.
The only time that this “excellent spirit” refers to specific characters in the Bible is here in the book of Daniel, but the same principle is seen in the lives of Moses, David, Esther, and so many others throughout God’s Word.
They believed God for something more, and because of their attitude of faithfulness—their excellent spirits—they were promoted.
Having an excellent spirit will attract the promotion of God.
When Jamie and I were called into ministry, I quit my secular job. For six years, I pastored three little churches in Texas and Colorado. The first one had a maximum of 12 people. The second grew to about 50. And the third averaged 100 people every Sunday in a town with a population of 144.
Even with this success, I saw myself ministering to people all over the world. The difference between the things I saw in my heart and what was actually happening caused me to walk around in a constant state of conflict and tension. But I knew I had to remain faithful.
The temptation to coast was there, but God was calling me to be faithful. So, I would preach to 5 people like they were 5,000. I gave it everything I had. And I really believe that that attitude solidified the excellent spirit inside me and allowed God to promote me to where I am today.
God is the one who promotes people, and He has placed potential on the inside of every single person.
An excellent spirit is faithful, consistent, and has a moral foundation that doesn’t compromise. And that will get you promoted!
God delights in excellence, and excellence begins in the heart.
