Word of God Speak
I remember sitting in my church office, asking God to baptize me in the Spirit.
When nothing happened, I went back to studying. Eventually, I would ask God to baptize me in the Holy Spirit again…and again. I kept doing this, not really knowing what to expect.
This post is an excerpt from Charis Bible College's new release, The Holy Spirit: Your Comforter, Helper and Friend, written by Charis Instructor Wendell Parr.
One day, I finally said, “Lord, I believe that this tongues is a vital part of what I’m after. So, I’m asking You to baptize me in the Spirit, and I’m going to speak in tongues.” At that very moment, a few strange, little words came out of my mouth.
That must be it! I thought as I ran next door to the parsonage where we lived. I was so excited to tell my wife, Linda, that I’d been baptized in the Spirit and was speaking in tongues. By the time I hit the second step, however, I heard a voice say, You just made that up. You didn’t say anything in tongues. You did all of that yourself. Stopped dead in my tracks, I thought, That was me.
One day, I read an advertisement in the newspaper. The First Assembly of God church in a town just twelve miles away was having a revival. The ad said the guest speaker was an authority on the ministry of the Holy Spirit. After service on the first night of the revival, I went to talk to the guest minister. I explained what happened, and he said, “Let’s turn over to Acts, chapter 2.”
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
After reading it over a few times, the part that says “and began to speak” jumped out at me. I realized that I had to do the speaking. It was the Holy Spirit that gave the utterance, or meaning to what I said, but I had to speak.
I went out of that place rejoicing and speaking in tongues, and I haven’t looked back since. That night was one of the first times I allowed God’s Word to teach me. It is so important for us to experience the Word for ourselves. When we learn to value what God says above what man thinks, it brings peace and frees us to live our lives with God’s ability.
